What’s Gultskra Artikler?
Gultskra Artikler is a mysterious project in many ways – from the name to ever changing band members.
Gultskra Artikler is a collage world, compiled from different languages. GULT is a corrupted “guilt”, SKRA is taken from Icelandic «skraningarkerfi» (we are unable to find a translation), and ARTIKLER is Danish word for “article”.
Gultskra Artikler in various time included variable number of members (from zero to eternity), but Aleksey Devyanin (AKA Stud) always was always known as the core of the project.
These days, when music is becoming artificial and “genetically modified” Gultskra Artikler emerges deep from Russia.
First mini-album “Gruppa Turistov” was released in 2003 on the German net-label Autoplate. Critics trying to define the unique style of GA were describing his music as “siberian cut-up neofolk”. This work was created by duo of Stud and his friend Aleksey Glazachev. In 2004 Autoplate published another album of Gultskra Artikler: “Gololed” which was a New Year’s present (officially released at 1st January) was also highly acclaimed by international avant-garde Internet audience, and in conjunction with “Gruppa Turistov” is one of the most memorable Autoplate releases. Also, in 2004 the first physical Gultskra Artikler release was out: limited to 50 copies mini-CD-r “Golova” on japanese label Saag Records. In 2005 GA released the fantastic “Moreprodukt” on Nexsound net-label, and in 2006, the first valid CD release “Pofigistka” finally was published on Lampse.
As for electronic composing, Aleksey is not an amateur. His neo-idm project Stud is well-known on the independent IDM scene around the world. His first EP’s were published in 2002, and since then he released more than 15 albums, on such notable net-labels as Kikapu, Kahvi, Acedia Music and others. Stud believes, that good music should be free and musician is a real “artist” only if he thinks about the musical concept of his work, not about his royalty. The person should pay only for the high quality of sound and for the nice artwork and package – in other words, for the product, not for the music.
Aleksey Devyaning was curating the net-label Please Do Something (started in 2003 in collaboration with Brandon Reid Huey, AKA Crashed By Car). After publishing 15 releases, they self-annihilated, but during this time, PDS anticipated actual todays trends of the independent american and canadian scene, and also gave birth to the rising star of the Type Records and indie\glitch\electronic music scene – Khonnor (Connor Kirby-Long).
Aleksey was born and grew up in Novosibirsk. Always being surrounded by snow, ice drifts and unfriendly industries, Stud is quite avoidant and unsociable. Up to 16 years old, he never seriously thought the music to be a part of his world. But after a while, he entered the kingdom of strange, electronic sounds. He first met Engineer Garin online, on the IRC-channel, after chatting and making music via the Internet for a few years, Stud moved to Moscow, and they became real friends. The first live performance of Gultskra Artikler took place at the end of 2004, at the Abrakadabra festival.
The music of GA is uniquely unpredictable, you will never be tired of listening Gultskra Artikler. Frosty coats in the living room, glass of cheap vodka in one go, squeaking of the old grandpa’s armchair. Abandoned tractor in the rye field. It’s really stunning, how simply GA can do such an amazing, complicated manipulations with sound, and how his very experimental and difficult compositions are always 100% real music with a capital M. Try it once, and you will never forget the taste of real Gultskra Artikler.
